Who Can Replace a Car Key Fob?

Compare what auto parts stores, hardware stores, kiosks, dealers and locksmiths can actually do for car keys — and where each one stops.

Most places that advertise car keys can do part of the job. Very few can do all of it. The difference matters because a key that isn’t paired to your car’s immobilizer won’t start the engine, no matter how perfectly it’s cut.

The short answer

Cutting a key and programming it to your car are two separate jobs. Auto parts stores sell keys and hand you a DIY kit. Self-service kiosks copy a key you already have. A handful of retailers genuinely cut and program at the store, but only in some locations and only if you still have a working key. If every key is gone, a locksmith or the dealer is the only option.

Why “cutting” and “programming” aren’t the same thing

A modern car key has a mechanical side and an electronic side. The blade turns the lock or slots into the ignition. A transponder chip talks to the immobilizer and decides whether the engine is allowed to run.

Retailers are unusually clear about this in their own product copy, because they get returns when people miss it. Car Keys Express blanks sold through auto parts chains carry the warning that cutting alone will not allow you to start the engine. Advance Auto Parts’ own transponder listings state that a key must be both cut and programmed, and that cutting on its own won’t work.

So when a store says it “does car keys,” the useful question is which half.

Auto parts stores

AutoZone, O’Reilly and Advance are retailers here rather than service providers. They sell blanks, chipped keys and DIY programming kits, and they sell professional tools to people who already know how to use them.

AutoZone stocks Car Keys Express products with a self-programming app. O’Reilly’s store services list covers testing, scanning and loaner tools — the keyless-entry remotes it sells are described as customer-programmable through the OBD-II port, which is remote-button programming rather than immobilizer pairing. Advance’s own help documentation doesn’t list key cutting or programming among store services.

Key cutting availability at these chains has changed in recent years and appears to vary by location. Call the specific store rather than assuming.

Self-service kiosks

The kiosk inside a store is usually run by a different company than the store. KeyMe operates in Walmart locations. Minute Key operates in Lowe’s and Home Depot.

Kiosks copy. Give one a working key and it produces a duplicate, and for many vehicles it can copy a chipped key. What a kiosk cannot do is originate a key for a car when none exists. KeyMe states this plainly on its own site: with no working key to your car, only a locksmith can create one.

Home Depot’s Minute Key presence is documented for house and office keys. Home Depot’s own materials don’t describe an in-store car key cutting or programming service, so treat car keys there as a product purchase rather than a service.

Lowe’s

Lowe’s is one of the two retailers that genuinely programs. Its own guide describes the kiosk copying remotes and fobs, traditional car keys being cut off-site and shipped back within a couple of business days, and smart keys being programmed by a Minute Key technician in the parking lot rather than at the machine itself.

The limit is stated directly in Lowe’s own material: the service creates spares. It can’t create a replacement if your key is already lost or damaged. Coverage is quoted at roughly 80% of vehicles and registration is required.

Ace Hardware

Ace is a franchise co-operative, which means the honest answer is that it depends on the store. Participating locations running Ace’s KeyStart program cut and program chip keys and fobs while you shop, with programming included in the purchase, and keys have to be bought from Ace to be cut or programmed there.

Whether a given Ace does push-to-start proximity fobs, or can help with no working key, isn’t stated in Ace’s own materials. Ask before driving over.

Costco

The Costco offering isn’t really Costco. It’s Car Keys Express running scheduled events at select warehouses on set days. Car Keys Express itself does the full range — cutting, cloning, transponder programming, proximity fobs, and originating keys for some makes with none present.

The catch is timing. It’s an event at particular locations, not a service counter you can visit when your key breaks.

Dealership and locksmith

Both can do the whole job including all-keys-lost. The dealership requires the car to reach them. A mobile locksmith comes to the vehicle, which is the practical difference when the car can’t be driven.

The line almost everything else stops at

If you have no working key, the list of options collapses to two: the dealer, or a locksmith. Every kiosk requires an existing key to copy. Every parts store sells you a product rather than performing the work. Lowe’s says outright it makes spares only.

This isn’t a marketing claim — it’s what each of those companies says about its own service. It’s also why the cheapest option today is often getting a spare cut while you still have one, rather than waiting until you don’t.

If you’re in that position and want the practical detail, our key fob replacement guide covers what happens next and what to have ready.

Frequently asked questions

Can AutoZone replace a key fob?

AutoZone sells key fobs and DIY programming kits rather than performing programming as a service. Their own product copy notes that cutting a key alone won't let you start the engine. Availability of in-store cutting varies by location.

Can AutoZone make a key without the original?

No. Originating a key with no working key present requires equipment and manufacturer data access that parts stores don't use — they sell professional tools rather than operating them.

Will Home Depot cut a car key?

Home Depot's kiosk service is documented for house and office keys, and it sells DIY car key products. Its own materials don't describe an in-store car key cutting or programming service.

Does Home Depot reprogram key fobs?

Not as a store service, based on Home Depot's own published material. The car key products it sells are self-programming kits the customer sets up.

Does O'Reilly copy car keys?

O'Reilly's published store services cover testing, scanning and loaner tools. It sells key blanks and keyless-entry remotes described as customer-programmable via OBD-II, which programs remote buttons rather than the immobilizer chip.

Can Walmart make a duplicate car key?

The kiosk in Walmart stores is operated by KeyMe and can copy many existing keys, including chipped ones for supported vehicles. It cannot create a key when none exists.

Does Ace Hardware cut and program car keys?

At participating locations, yes — Ace's KeyStart program includes cutting and programming with the purchase of the key. Ace is a co-operative, so capability varies by store.

Can I get replacement car keys without the original?

Yes, but only from a dealer or an automotive locksmith. Every retail and kiosk option requires an existing key to copy.
