If your Mazda’s doors lock and unlock by themselves as you walk up to it, or the fob has stopped working on one side of the car, there’s a documented fault worth ruling out before you replace anything.
The fault that looks like a dead fob
Mazda issued a bulletin covering water getting into the outer door handle connector and corroding it.
The symptoms are specific and strange enough to be memorable:
- The key fob and the door request switch stop working
- The doors repeatedly lock and unlock as you approach the car
- A red KEY warning light, with trouble codes for the door request switch circuit
That second one is the tell. A car cycling its own locks while you walk toward it isn’t a fob problem — it’s the antenna in the door handle sending confused signals because the connector behind it has corroded.
The bulletin covers 2014–2017 Mazda3 and Mazda6, 2013–2017 CX-5, and 2016–2017 CX-3, CX-9 and MX-5. The fix is inspecting and replacing the handle assembly with added protection against water ingress — bodywork rather than key work.
If that’s your situation, a new fob won’t help and neither will we. It’s worth checking before spending anything.
Losing one key is not like losing all of them
Mazda’s own owner documentation is unusually reassuring on this point, and it’s worth knowing because it differs from some other manufacturers.
If you’ve lost a key and still have others, Mazda’s instruction is to bring the remaining keys to a dealer. The lost key is made inoperative, and the electronic codes of the keys you still have are reset and re-registered — so your remaining keys keep working.
That’s the documented behaviour for the lost-one-key case, and it’s the opposite of what happens on some makes, where a reset wipes everything.
For a genuine situation where every key is gone, we don’t have documentation describing what happens, and we’re not going to guess. Bring every key you own regardless — it’s good practice on any vehicle and it costs nothing.

How many keys can a Mazda hold?
Mazda’s smart-key documentation specifies up to six keys per vehicle, and instructs bringing all your keys when additional ones are being added.
That second part matters. If you’re having a spare made, bring the ones you already have rather than leaving them at home.
What we won’t tell you
Two things circulate widely about Mazda keys that we couldn’t verify.
The model year Mazda first fitted immobilizers. No manufacturer source states it. We know they’re present on modern Mazdas because the owner’s manuals describe them; we don’t know when they started.
The Ford connection. Mazda and Ford shared platforms for years, and you’ll find claims that certain Mazdas use Ford’s immobilizer system. That may well be true — but we found no Mazda source, no Ford source and no trade publication establishing which models or which years. It stays off this page until one exists.
Our research on this turned up a document that looked like a Mazda immobilizer manual and turned out to be a Subaru one. That’s the level of noise around this question, and it’s why we’d rather tell you the year and model matter than repeat something we can’t stand behind.
What we do on site. We cut and program Mazda keys and smart keys at the vehicle, including all-keys-lost, on most models. The very newest models depend on programming-tool updates; tell us the year and we’ll know before we drive out.
What to have ready
- Model year and model
- Whether it’s a key you turn or a push-button start
- Every Mazda key you own — Mazda’s own instruction, not just ours
- Whether the doors have been behaving oddly — see the fault above
- Proof of ownership — registration or title, and matching photo ID
What it costs
Depends on the key type and whether the immobilizer needs work beyond the key itself. What determines car key replacement cost covers what moves it.
Fob just stopped working? It may only be the battery.

My Mazda’s doors lock and unlock by themselves as I walk up.
That’s a documented fault — water corroding the outer door handle connector. Mazda’s bulletin covers certain 2013–2017 Mazda3, Mazda6, CX-5, CX-3, CX-9 and MX-5 vehicles. A new fob won’t fix it.
I lost one Mazda key. Will my others still work?
Yes. Mazda’s instruction is to bring your remaining keys so their codes are reset and re-registered while the lost key is made inoperative. The keys you still have keep working.
How many keys can my Mazda have?
Mazda’s documentation specifies up to six per vehicle for smart-key models.
Do I need to bring my other keys when getting a spare made?
Yes — that’s Mazda’s own instruction for adding keys, not just ours.
Does my Mazda use a Ford immobilizer system?
Mazda and Ford shared platforms for years and the claim circulates widely, but we found no source from either manufacturer establishing which models or years. We won’t state it without one.
When did Mazda start fitting immobilizers?
We don’t know, and no manufacturer source we found states it. They’re present on modern Mazdas. Give us your year and model.
