Every kind, one call

Woodbury Common has more parking than anywhere else we cover, and a large share of the people in it are a long way from home — sometimes another country. That changes what a lost key actually means.

Woodbury Common

The outlets sit at Central Valley with several thousand free parking spaces across surface lots and a deck built in 2015. It’s the largest single concentration of parked cars in the four counties, by a wide margin.

We’re not going to quote a precise space count. A figure circulates widely and the operator doesn’t publish it, so we’d rather say “several thousand” than repeat a number we can’t stand behind.

The parking pattern is a long day: people arrive, shop for hours, and come back to a car in a very large lot with limited landmarks.

The visitor problem

This is what makes Woodbury different from every other town on this site.

The outlets draw heavy domestic and international tourist traffic — coach parties, day trips from the city, and overseas visitors on itineraries. Which means a meaningful share of the drivers here have:

No spare key within reach. Not at home twenty minutes away — at home in another state, or another country.

Possibly a hire car, which changes what’s possible. If the vehicle is rented, the rental company controls the keys and the paperwork, and the first call should be to them rather than to us. We’ll say that rather than take a booking we can’t act on.

A schedule. A flight, a coach, a hotel check-in somewhere else. The clock on a Woodbury lockout is usually harder than a local one.

If you’re driving your own car, the ordinary answers apply. If it’s a hire car, ring the rental desk first — they may have a solution and they will certainly have opinions about anyone else touching it.

Harriman station

Harriman station, in the Town of Woodbury, is on Metro-North’s Port Jervis Line and has 985 parking spaces — the largest station lot north of Suffern.

Metro-North doesn’t publish per-station numbers for this line, so we won’t quote ridership. The parking speaks for itself: nearly a thousand cars, all day, keys travelling to New Jersey and New York.

There’s also a weekend shuttle between the station and the outlets, which means some of those cars belong to shoppers rather than commuters.

No dealer here

There is no franchised car dealership in Woodbury or Central Valley. The nearest are around Chester, or the Route 17K strip at Newburgh.

For a visitor with a car that won’t start, that’s academic anyway — the dealer route needs a car that drives and, usually, a local address to leave it at.

Our comparison of the options covers the alternatives.

Getting here from Poughkeepsie

Woodbury is one of the furthest points we cover — down through Orange County to the Thruway Exit 16 interchange.

It’s a long run and we’d rather tell you that upfront than have you wondering where we are.

How quickly we get there. Most calls in Woodbury are reached within about an hour, sometimes longer at rush hour or with bridge traffic. You get a real arrival time on the phone before we set off.

What to have ready

  • Which lot, and roughly where — the outlet parking is very large
  • Year, make and model
  • Whether the car is yours or a hire car — it changes the answer entirely
  • Whether you have any working key, and where it is
  • Any schedule you’re working to
  • Proof of ownership — registration or title, and matching photo ID

Frequently asked questions

I’m locked out at Woodbury Common.

Tell us which lot and roughly where. It’s several thousand spaces and a rough location saves a long search.

It’s a hire car.

Call the rental company first. They control the keys and the paperwork, and they may have their own arrangement. We’d rather tell you that than take a booking we can’t act on.

I’m visiting from overseas and my spare is at home.

Then the spare isn’t an option and a new key is. Tell us what you’re driving and where it is.

Is there a dealer in Woodbury?

No franchised dealership in Woodbury or Central Valley. The nearest are around Chester or on Route 17K at Newburgh.

How big is the Harriman station lot?

985 spaces — the largest station lot north of Suffern. There’s a weekend shuttle between the station and the outlets.

Do you come out this far?

Yes, though it’s one of our longest runs. Worth knowing rather than assuming we’re nearby.
