Every kind, one call

Millbrook is a small town with one franchised dealership, two institutional campuses and a handful of seasonal visitor lots. That’s the whole picture, and it’s why this page is shorter than the ones for the rail towns.

The dealer

Ruge’s Chevrolet sits on Route 44 in the Town of Washington, and it’s the only franchised new-car store in the area.

If you drive a Chevrolet and the car is drivable, that’s your closest option and it’s worth using. For every other make, the nearest franchised dealers are Rhinebeck to the west or Poughkeepsie to the southwest — both far enough that a tow is the real cost when a car won’t start.

Our comparison of the options covers the alternatives.

The institutions

The Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies is a research campus on Sharon Turnpike with staff parking, trails and visitor lots. Millbrook School, a private prep school, is the other significant employer, and its Trevor Zoo has its own free lot.

Both produce the same kind of parking — staff who arrive in the morning and leave in the evening, plus visitors on top.

The seasonal visitors

Innisfree Garden draws day visitors to a lakeside lot with free parking, and Wing’s Castle and the Cary trails add to it. Millbrook’s village centre brings weekend traffic to street parking.

These are seasonal and daytime rather than the all-day, all-year pattern the commuter towns produce. A garden lockout in June is a real problem; the same lot is empty in February.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a car dealer in Millbrook?

One — Ruge’s Chevrolet on Route 44. For other makes the nearest are Rhinebeck or Poughkeepsie.

Do you come out this far?

Yes. Millbrook is inside our regular coverage, east of Poughkeepsie off Route 44.

Is there a train station in Millbrook?

No. The nearest is Wassaic, about ten miles east, at the end of the Harlem Line.

I’m visiting Innisfree and I’m locked out.

Tell us which lot. Visitor calls usually mean no spare key nearby, so we plan for that.

My fob stopped working in the village.

Try the battery first — it’s often the whole answer. See our key fob battery guide.
