Every kind, one call
Dutchess is home. We’re based in Poughkeepsie, and it’s the only county where we’re not travelling to get to you.
Two railways, one on each edge
The county’s geography is unusually neat for our purposes.
The Hudson Line runs down the western edge, along the river, ending at Poughkeepsie — the northern terminus of Metro-North’s Hudson service. Beacon and New Hamburg sit on it.
The Harlem Line runs down the eastern edge, ending at Wassaic in the Town of Amenia. Pawling, Dover and Amenia sit on that one.
Two railways, two terminuses, one county. That matters because commuter lots are where most of our work happens — cars parked at dawn with the keys travelling to the city, and a problem surfacing after dark.
Terminus lots behave differently from the rest, incidentally: they collect drivers from further out than their ridership suggests, including from Connecticut. There’s more on that on the Amenia page.
The Taconic down the middle
Between the two railways runs the Taconic State Parkway, through Milan, Clinton, Stanford and Union Vale.
Those are the rural towns, and they have almost nothing in common with the station towns on either edge. No commuter lots, no hospitals, no dealerships. What they have is a parkway with very little shoulder in stretches — which is why the pages for those towns say that a car stopped on the Taconic is a 911 call before it’s a locksmith call.

Where the dealers are
Dutchess concentrates its car dealerships into one corridor.
Route 9 through Poughkeepsie and Wappingers Falls carries something like fifteen franchised stores between them — the densest cluster in the county by a wide margin. Rhinebeck has three. Millbrook and Pawling have one each.
Everywhere else has none. Hyde Park, Red Hook, Beacon’s neighbours and every rural eastern town mean leaving town to reach a franchised dealer for most makes.
That’s the practical shape of the county: if you’re on Route 9 and your car drives, the dealer is a real option. If you’re anywhere east of the Taconic and your car doesn’t, it isn’t.
Our comparison of what each option can do covers the alternatives.

Each has its own page, because a lockout at Beacon station is a different problem from one at a Millbrook garden or on a Taconic shoulder.
Frequently asked questions
Do you cover all of Dutchess County?
Yes. It’s our home county — we’re based in Poughkeepsie, and every town we serve here has its own page.
Which towns have train stations?
Poughkeepsie, New Hamburg and Beacon on the Hudson Line; Pawling, Dover and Amenia on the Harlem Line. The county has both, one on each edge.
Where are the car dealerships in Dutchess?
Concentrated on Route 9 through Poughkeepsie and Wappingers Falls, with three in Rhinebeck and one each in Millbrook and Pawling. Most other towns have none.
My car is stopped on the Taconic.
Call 911 first. Stretches of the parkway have little or no shoulder and a stationary car is a hazard. Get behind the guardrail; the key can wait.
How quickly can you reach me in Dutchess?
Depends where — Hyde Park is ten minutes from us and Amenia is a good deal further. Tell us where the car is and you’ll get a realistic answer.
