Every kind, one call
Ulster County has no trains. Not a reduced service, not a single station — no passenger rail of any kind anywhere in the county.
That’s the fact that shapes everything about a car key problem on this side of the river.
What no rail means
Across the Hudson, our work follows stations. Cars parked at dawn, keys carried to the city, a problem discovered after dark in a commuter lot.
None of that exists here. The nearest stations are Poughkeepsie and Rhinecliff, both across the river in Dutchess.
So the long-stay parking in Ulster is four other things:
Thruway park-and-rides. Exit 19 at Kingston holds 236 spaces, the largest lot we’ve found in the four counties. Exit 18 at New Paltz holds around 150. These are carpool and coach lots, and they produce a specific problem — when someone can’t get into their car at the end of the day, the person who drove them has already gone home and there’s no train to wait for.
Hospitals. HealthAlliance runs two campuses in Kingston. Ellenville Regional is a critical-access hospital serving the south-west. Every day of the year, regardless of season.
Campuses. SUNY New Paltz has around 7,200 students; SUNY Ulster at Stone Ridge around 3,000. Student cars sit longer than any other kind.
And the ridge. Minnewaska, Mohonk, Sam’s Point, the rail trails. Ulster has more outdoor recreation parking than the other three counties combined, and hikers leave cars at dawn and come back at dusk.
Dealers, and where they aren’t
Kingston has the county’s only real dealer cluster — around ten franchised makes along Ulster Avenue and Route 28.
Everywhere else in the county has effectively none. New Paltz has no franchised dealer at all despite being the county’s largest college town. Ellenville’s only one closed permanently, leaving the south-west with nothing for roughly twenty-five miles.
That’s the widest dealer gap in our whole coverage area, and it’s why a locksmith who comes to the vehicle matters more in Ulster than anywhere else. For most drivers here, the dealer route starts with a tow.
Our comparison of what each option can do covers what’s available.
