Every kind, one call

Rosendale’s one real car park belongs to a rail trail, and it fills for a few months a year. The rest of the time this is a village on NY-213 where car key problems happen in driveways.

The trestle

The Rosendale Trestle is a former railway bridge, 940 feet long and 150 feet above the creek, now carrying the Wallkill Valley Rail Trail.

Walkers park at the Binnewater Road trailhead about a quarter mile north and cross on foot. It’s a couple of hours out and back, longer if people continue along the trail.

That’s a genuine generator but a seasonal one — busy in decent weather, empty in February. The Widow Jane Mine and the cement-history site add a little more in season.

We’re not going to inflate it. This is a smaller version of what happens at Minnewaska or Cold Spring.

No dealer here

Rosendale has no franchised dealership. The nearest are Kingston, about eight miles north.

Short drive if the car works. A tow if it doesn’t — the same arithmetic as everywhere rural.

Our comparison of the options covers the rest.

The rest of the year

Most Rosendale calls aren’t from the trail at all. They’re driveways and village streets — a fob that stopped overnight, keys locked in while unloading.

If that’s you, one thing worth doing before calling anyone: check the house for the spare. In a driveway lockout it’s frequently in there, and it’s free.

What to have ready

  • Where the car is — trailhead, village, driveway
  • Year, make and model
  • Whether a spare exists in the house
  • Proof of ownership — registration or title, and matching photo ID

How quickly we get there. Most calls in Rosendale are reached within about an hour, sometimes longer at rush hour or with bridge traffic. You get a real arrival time on the phone before we set off.
