Every kind, one call
Gardiner has the main entrance to Minnewaska and a skydiving airfield. Both fill lots with cars belonging to people who will be gone all day, which is the only kind of parking the town has.
Minnewaska
The park preserve’s main entrance is here on US-44/55, with nine day-use lots and a fee station charging per car. The Peterskill lot on Route 44/55 is the other access point.
Nine lots is a lot of parking, and it fills. Hikers and climbers arrive early, walk into the Shawangunks, and come back tired hours later.
The key problem at a park entrance is the trailhead problem everywhere: no reliable phone signal on the ridge, fading light by the time anyone gets back, and a fob that had all day to work its way out of an open pocket. Our page on where to keep car keys has the sensible version — for a day out here, a zipped internal pocket.
The airfield
Gardiner Airport on Sand Hill Road is a private field and home to a skydiving operation.
Drop zones produce a peculiar parking pattern. People come for a whole day rather than a jump — waiting for weather, waiting for a slot, watching. Cars sit from morning to evening with their owners on the field, and there are spectators as well as jumpers.
It’s the only airfield of any kind in our Ulster coverage, and it’s worth knowing that a car stuck there is a car on private property, which occasionally complicates access. Tell us if that’s where you are.

No dealer here
Gardiner has no franchised dealership. The nearest independents are in New Paltz and Highland; the nearest franchised stores are Kingston or across the river in Poughkeepsie.
Given the town’s parking is mostly a state park entrance and a private airfield, “drive it to a dealer” is rarely the available option anyway.
Our comparison of the options covers the rest.

Frequently asked questions
I’m at the Minnewaska entrance and I’ve lost my keys.
Tell us which of the lots. There are nine and they’re spread along the entrance road.
I’m at the drop zone.
Say so — it’s a private field and access can need arranging. We’ll come to the car either way.
Is there a dealer in Gardiner?
No. The nearest franchised dealers are Kingston or Poughkeepsie; New Paltz and Highland have independent lots.
Do you come out here?
Yes. Gardiner is across the river and out past New Paltz, inside our regular coverage.
My fob won’t respond after a day on the ridge.
Cold and damp both do it. Try the battery first — see our key fob battery guide.
