Every kind, one call
New Paltz has more than seven thousand students and not one car dealership. Those two facts together make it the town in our whole coverage area where a lost key is most likely to become a genuine problem rather than an inconvenience.
No dealer here
There is no franchised new-car dealership in New Paltz — not for your make, not for any make. What’s here are independent used-car lots.
The nearest franchised stores are around fifteen miles out: Kingston to the north, or across the river in Poughkeepsie.
Fifteen miles is twenty minutes in a working car. In one that won’t start, it’s a tow before anyone even looks at the problem — and the tow is frequently the larger cost.
That’s the standing situation here, and it applies to every driver in town regardless of what they drive.
SUNY
SUNY New Paltz had 7,233 students in autumn 2024 — 6,197 undergraduates and 1,036 postgraduates — parking across a spread of resident and commuter permit lots: Elting, West, Wallkill, South and the Route 32 lots among them.
Student cars are the longest-dwelling vehicles anywhere. A commuter’s car sits twelve hours; a student’s can sit for a month between uses, then be needed urgently on a Friday.
And here’s where it compounds with the dealer gap. The person least likely to have a working spare nearby is a student, because the spare is at a parent’s house — often in another county, sometimes another state. So the usual first suggestion, go and get your other key, doesn’t apply. And the usual second one, go to the dealer, doesn’t apply either, because there isn’t one.
That leaves someone coming to the car. It’s not a sales argument; it’s arithmetic.
If you’re a student here, the practical version is: find out now whether your spare actually works, before the day you need it. A key that’s sat in a drawer since freshers’ week may have a flat battery or may never have been programmed properly.

The Gunks
New Paltz is the gateway to the Shawangunks, and the parking that comes with it is significant.
Mohonk Preserve trailheads — West Trapps, Spring Farm, Testimonial Gateway — fill with climbers and hikers who leave a car at dawn and return at dusk. Mohonk Mountain House adds overnight resort parking. Minnewaska is reached through here on the way out to US-44/55, and the Wallkill Valley Rail Trail has village lots.
Climbing parking has a specific characteristic worth naming: people are often out longer than they planned, in places with no signal, and a fob on a harness or in an open pocket during a climb is a fob with every opportunity to go missing. Our page on where to keep car keys covers the sensible version.
The Thruway lot
The park-and-ride at Thruway Exit 18 holds around 150 spaces on NY-299.
Same pattern as Kingston’s: carpoolers and coach passengers rather than rail commuters, since Ulster County has no passenger rail at all. Which means when someone can’t get into their car at the end of the day, the person who could have driven them home has already gone.
Getting here from Poughkeepsie
New Paltz is about half an hour from our base, across the Mid-Hudson Bridge and out on NY-299.
We cross the river. New Paltz is a regular run rather than an exception.
How quickly we get there. Most calls in New Paltz are reached within about an hour, sometimes longer at rush hour or with bridge traffic. You get a real arrival time on the phone before we set off.
What to have ready
- Where the car is — which campus lot, which trailhead, the Thruway lot, the village
- Year, make and model
- Whether you have any working key, and where it physically is
- Whether you’re a student, and where your spare actually lives
- Proof of ownership — registration or title, and matching photo ID

Frequently asked questions
Is there a car dealership in New Paltz?
No franchised dealer of any make. The in-town options are independent used-car lots. The nearest franchised stores are about fifteen miles away in Kingston or across the river in Poughkeepsie.
I’m a SUNY student and my spare key is at home.
The most common call we get from New Paltz. Having a key made here is usually faster than waiting for one to be posted, and it leaves you with two.
Does my spare actually work?
Worth checking before you need it. A spare that’s sat unused since the start of term may have a flat battery, or on some vehicles may never have been programmed correctly.
I’ve lost my keys climbing in the Gunks.
Happens. Tell us which trailhead and where the car is. If the key is genuinely gone rather than misplaced, that’s a replacement job rather than a lockout.
Do you cross the river to New Paltz?
Yes — about half an hour from our base, and a regular run.
Is there a train station in New Paltz?
No. Ulster County has no passenger rail at all. The Thruway park-and-ride at Exit 18 is the closest equivalent.
My fob stopped working after the car sat all semester.
Long idle periods are exactly when fob batteries go. Try that first — see our key fob battery guide.
