Every kind, one call

Putnam is the smallest county we cover and the most concentrated. One hospital serves the whole of it, and almost everything else sits along two railway corridors.

One hospital

Putnam Hospital Center in Carmel is the county’s hospital. Not one of several — the one.

That has a practical consequence for us. Hospital lots are the most reliable generator of long-stay parking anywhere, because staff work twelve-hour shifts and visitors stay for however long it takes. In a county with a single hospital, all of that concentrates in one place, and it runs every day of the year regardless of season.

The Carmel page covers what that means, along with the county courthouse in the same hamlet — the two places in Putnam where people genuinely cannot step out to deal with a car.

Two lines, four stations

The Harlem Line runs up the eastern side through Brewster, Southeast and Patterson. Brewster and Southeast together hold roughly 1,500 parking spaces — the densest commuter parking in the county by far.

The Hudson Line runs up the western side through Garrison and Cold Spring, both in Philipstown.

Between them is high ground, state park and the Taconic. There’s no interstate crossing the middle of the county — I-84 clips the northern edge at Brewster and that’s it.

Which means the two halves of Putnam don’t connect the way a map suggests. Getting from Cold Spring to Brewster is a real drive, and that’s worth knowing when you’re asking how long we’ll be.

The dealers

Brewster has three franchised stores on Route 22. Carmel has one dealer group with two franchises. Mahopac has one.

Cold Spring, Philipstown and Patterson have none at all. For most makes in those towns, the nearest franchised dealer is out of the county entirely — Beacon across the Dutchess line, or further.

Our comparison of what each option can do covers the alternatives.

Frequently asked questions

Do you cover all of Putnam County?

Yes, though it’s a genuine drive from our Poughkeepsie base — Brewster is around three quarters of an hour.

Is there more than one hospital in Putnam?

No. Putnam Hospital Center in Carmel serves the whole county.

Which Putnam towns have stations?

Brewster and Southeast plus Patterson on the Harlem Line; Cold Spring and Garrison on the Hudson Line.

Which Putnam towns have no car dealership?

Cold Spring, Philipstown and Patterson. For most makes that means leaving the county.

Why does it take so long to get from one side of Putnam to the other?

There’s no interstate through the middle — I-84 only clips the north. The two rail corridors are further apart in driving time than they look on a map.
