Every kind, one call
Cold Spring and Philipstown have two Metro-North stations between them and some of the busiest hiking parking in the Hudson Valley — though one major trailhead is currently closed, which has moved where the cars are.
Two Hudson Line lots
Cold Spring station, in the village, recorded 528 weekday riders in 2018 with 223 spaces, permit and metered, LAZ-operated.
Garrison station, in the same town a few miles south, had 334 weekday riders and 291 spaces on the same arrangement.
Two stations in one town is the same situation Brewster has, and it produces the same practical instruction: say which one. They’re not close, and a drive between them wastes time you’d rather not spend standing in a car park.
The commuter pattern here is the usual one — car parked at dawn, key travels to the city, problem surfaces after dark. What’s different is the village itself, which is small enough that there’s nowhere much to wait.
The trailheads, and which are open
Cold Spring is the gateway to Hudson Highlands State Park Preserve, and hiker parking is a bigger generator here than commuting on weekends.
Breakneck Ridge is currently closed. The trailhead and its Metro-North station shut in April 2025 for roughly two years while the Hudson Highlands Fjord Trail is built, and there’s no Route 9D parking north of the tunnel during the work.
If you’d planned to park there, you can’t. What’s open instead: Little Stony Point, the Washburn and Cornish trailheads, and the Notch Trail.
That closure has concentrated hikers into the remaining lots, which are busier than they were.
The lockout pattern for hiking is its own thing. Cars sit from early morning until dusk. Phone signal at trailheads is unreliable. And a fob that went into an open jacket pocket before a scramble has had all day to go somewhere it can’t be found. Our guide on where to keep car keys covers the sensible version — for a hike, a zipped internal pocket.

No dealer here
There is no franchised car dealership in Cold Spring or anywhere in Philipstown.
The nearest are Beacon, across the county line, or Carmel to the east. Both are a reasonable drive — if the car drives. When it doesn’t, that’s a tow before anyone looks at it.
Our comparison of what each option can do covers the alternatives.

Frequently asked questions
Is Breakneck Ridge open?
Not currently. The trailhead and its Metro-North station closed in April 2025 for about two years for Fjord Trail construction, with no Route 9D parking north of the tunnel. Little Stony Point, Washburn, Cornish and the Notch Trail are open.
Cold Spring has two stations?
Two in the town — Cold Spring in the village and Garrison a few miles south. They’re not close together, so say which one your car is at.
I’ve lost my key on a hike.
More common than you’d think. Tell us where the car is; we come to it. If the key is genuinely gone rather than misplaced, that’s a replacement rather than a lockout.
Is there a car dealer in Cold Spring?
No franchised dealer in Cold Spring or Philipstown. The nearest are Beacon or Carmel.
My fob stopped working after sitting at the station all day.
Try the battery first — it’s often the whole problem. See our key fob battery guide.
Do you come down to Garrison as well?
Yes — same town, same coverage.
